Intel Has Announced 5.5GHz Capable 12th Gen CPU

Following a teaser earlier this week, Intel has announced a new 12th-gen desktop CPU that is capable of boosting to 5.5GHz on a single core. The announcement came during the company’s CES 2022 presentation.

Along with the ability to hit a maximum of 5.5GHz on a single core, the onstage demonstration showed the new processor running at a sustained 5.2GHz across all of its performance cores. However, there were no details given on what kind of power draw and cooling solution was required in order to achieve these results.

If you’re wanting to get your hands on one of these chips, you’re more than likely going to have to buy a pre-built PC as Intel’s executive vice president noted that the CPU would only be shipping to OEM customers.

Some research suggests that the new chip could be a limited edition, given the “S” suffix in its full name: Core i9-12900KS.
