Snapchat has announced that they have acquired Paris-based neurotech company NextMind, in an attempt to help drive the company’s long-term AR research efforts.
As said by Snapchat:
“Before joining Snap, NextMind developed non-invasive brain computer interface (BCI) technology in order to enable easier hands-free interaction using electronic devices, including computers and AR/VR wearables and headsets. This technology monitors neural activity to understand your intent when interacting with a computing interface, allowing you to push a virtual button simply by focusing on it.”
Does NextMind Read Thoughts?
According to Snap, NextMind’s tech does not send any signals towards the brain or read thoughts.
NextMind’s tech works by decoding the act of focusing in a way that translates brain activity into digital commands, allowing users to control visual interfaces in real time.
Tag
Visual objects are augmented with NeuroTags: faint graphic overlays optimised for the visual cortex)
Sense
The NextMind Sensor uses non-invasive EEG tech to detect electrical signals from the brain.
Decode
Machine learning algorithms decode brain activity and recognise your active visual focus
Activate
From the moment your focus is detected, the selected object reacts visually and executes your command.
