Instagram Tests Algorithm-Free, Reverse Chronological Feed Option

Following Instagram’s return of its reverse chronological, algorithm-free post feed towards the end of 2021, Instagram’s chief Adam Mosseri has shared a preview of how the platform’s new options will work.

2 Different Chronological Feed Options

Instagram is looking to add two different chronological feed options. This will enable users to view a list of contacts based on their Favorites list, and ‘Following’, which displays the accounts that users follow, without recommendations, in reverse timeline order.

Mosseri notes that the algorithm-defined ‘Home’ feed naturally features more recommendations over time as the platform looks to boost content in discovery, making it a crucial aspect to Instagram in their pursuit of getting people to spend more time and money in the app.

Users will soon have the option to view their posts in reverse chronological order once again, with the ability to toggle between different feeds.

As great as this sounds, it comes with one fundamental problem – if users are wanting to see their feed in reverse chronological order, they will have to manually switch over to their ‘Favorites’ or ‘Following’ feed each time they use the app. A bit tedious if you ask us

Mosseri states that the new feed options are now in testing, with the hopes of rolling it out in the first half of this year.
