Netflix Pauses Services in Russia

Due to the current situation unfolding in Ukraine, Netflix has announced that they will be suspending their services in Russia.

As of last week, Netflix refused to comply with a new Russian law that required large streamers to host 20 Russian propaganda channels, of which include NTV and Channel One. Netflix soon after announced that it is halting all productions and acquisitions in Russia. At the time, Netflix had been working on four Russian originals. Reports state that Netflix’s current subscriber count in Russia is floating at around 1 million.

However, Netflix is accompanied by a few others who have also cut ties with Russia; Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures as well as Sony have delayed the release of new films in Russian theatres.

As of yesterday, March 6th, TikTok hopped aboard the bandwagon and began halting all new video uploads and livestreams in Russia following the the country’s recently introduced “fake news” law. Google, Apple, Microsoft and Samsung have also suspended sales to the country.
