Facebook to Rebrand & Reveal a Metaverse-Inspired Name

To reflect the company’s focus on building a metaverse, Facebook is planning to change its company name next week. The new name will supposedly recast Facebook’s focus away from a social media company, signaling the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more.

Mark Zuckerberg will discuss the name change at Facebook’s Connect conference on October 28th, but reports suggest that the company could announce the name before then.

In an interview the Verge held with Mark Zuckerberg in July, he stated that over the next couple of years, “we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”

What is a Metaverse?

Although metaverse is a concept that is widely misunderstood, the term was coined by Neal Stephenson to describe a virtual world where people escape from the real world.

Zuckerberg describes the metaverse as “the next generation of the internet”. Given the case that one of the most controversial companies is adopting this concept, it’s going to have to be quite persuasive in its quest of explaining why its own virtual world is worth diving into.

Timing Is Everything

Consequently, Facebook’s proposed name change also comes at a time when it’s facing another round of scrutiny over an array of scandals surrounding its social media platforms, including documents leaked by a whistleblower to Congress.

Although the name change comes at an ideal time, one can’t help but wonder what is really happening behind the scenes; is the name change meant to be a distraction from Facebook’s bigger problems? Or is it genuinely a sign of more company changes to come? There’s still a lot we don’t know, but what we do know is that this is not the first time we’ve seen a tech giant change its company name.

Taking a Page From Google’s Book

Facebook is not the first well-established tech company to change its company name as its aspirations evolved. Back in 2015, Google restructured completely under a holding company known as Alphabet. This was done to signal that Google was no longer just a search engine.
