Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has recently published a new guide to various safety tips for journalists in order to help them protect themselves in the online space. However, these tips also more broadly apply to all users, giving a comprehensive overview of the range of tools and processes it houses to help its users avoid unwanted attention.
Available in 21 different languages, the new guide overviews details of Meta’s profile and system options for security and protection. The guide is spit up into specific sections that cover each of the company’s platforms; Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The guide starts off with the basics for Facebook, including:
- Password protection.
- Enabling two-factor authentication.

The Facebook section also highlights tips for Facebook page managers on how to secure their business profiles, while there are also notes on advice for protection on Messenger, guidance on bullying and harassment, as well notes on what to do if your profile has been hacked.

With regards to Instagram, the guide also includes general security tips, together with some notes on the platform’s comment moderation tools.

As for WhatsApp, there are explainers detailing:
- How to delete messages.
- How to remove messages from group chats.
- Information on platform-specific data options.

Meta’s new 32-page guide also provides links to additional resource tools and guides for further context.
All in all, it’s a helpful guide. While a lot of the content is journalist-specific, the majority of the tips apply to general users, making it a useful resource for anyone looking to gain a better grasping on privacy tools and options.
