Sony Unveils Headset Design for the PlayStation VR2

Sony has revealed the new design for their next-generation VR headset, the PS VR2, together with an updated final design image of the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.

At first glance, you’ll notice that the PS VR2 headset has a rather similar shape to the PS VR2 controller, mimicking an ‘orb’ look. The circular shape is said to represent the 360-degree view that players experience when they enter the VR world.

According to Sony, the design of the PS VR2 headset also took inspiration from the look of the PS5 product line. When PlayStation’s design team created the PS5 console, they had the next gen VR headset in mind, hence the similarities in the design. Since the PS VR2 headset is designed to have constant human contact, there was more emphasis on adding roundness to its design; somewhat similar to the rounded edges of the Pulse 3D headset and the DualSense controller.

With the PS VR2, Sony wanted to create something that could easily blend in with modern architecture and actually add to the décor of a living room.

As said by Sony:

“Our goal is to create a headset that will not only become an attractive part of your living room decor, but will also keep you immersed in your game world, to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller.”

For this reason, Sony placed significant focus on the headset’s ergonomics through extensive testing, making sure that it’s a comfortable fit for a variety of head sizes.

Having received a significant amount of positive feedback on the ergonomics of the first PS VR headset, Sony decided to keep the concept more or less the same for the PS VR2 headset. Players will also be familiar with the headset’s adjustable scope that places the scope area closer or further away from the face and placement of the stereo jack also remain the same.

“For the PS VR2 headset, we took comfort a few steps further by adding new features such as a lens adjustment dial, so users have an additional option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view. We also created a slimmer design with a slight weight reduction – even with the new added features such as the new built-in motor for the headset feedback. It was quite a challenge to create a slimmer design with new features added to improve upon our first headset, but our design and engineering teams proved this could be possible when we saw the final design!”

PS VR2 Features

Sony says that when the PS VR2 launches, it will take a massive leap forward in the way that we play games in VR. Some new features to look forward to in the PS VR2 system are as follows:

  • Stunning visual fidelity in 4K HDR
  • State-of-the art graphical rendering
  • Enhanced tracking such as inside-out camera tracking
  • New PS VR2 Sense Technology features such as headset feedback
  • Intuitive PS VR 2 Sense Controller

The PS VR2 system comes in a simple, single cord set up so that users can connect to their games immediately.
