To better optimise users’ home page with tailored recommendations, Netflix is rolling out a double Thumbs Up button that will essentially allow users to indicate that they really liked something.
According to Netflix, the feature comes as a highly requested option within the experience. With the goal to help viewers find shows and movies that they love, the video streaming platform are continually framing the service as the place where it is easiest to choose something to watch.
Currently, Netflix houses the options of Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down controls which were designed to help the company understand what to show to individual subscribers. The Double Thumbs Up feature takes this one step further.
In 2017, Netflix ditched the notorious five-star rating system in favour of the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down approach, which makes complete sense – with the gargantuan selection of shows available, many can attest to the fact that finding a show to watch on Netflix can sometimes be rather challenging. The company hope that the new button will help users better navigate Netflix’s library through a more nuanced way of ‘liking’ titles.
The real question though is, will Netflix offer the other side of the coin with an extended Thumbs Down option? Showing intense dislike for a title can be just as effective in tailoring content as an extreme like. YouTube ditched their dislike button, leaving users slightly less informed as to what content is worth watching – is this Netflix’s chance to bring solace to the dislike, and harness its power in favour of its user’s experience? Only time shall tell.
For now, Netflix’s Two Thumbs Up feature can be found alongside the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons on web, TV, Android, and iOS interfaces.
