The recent Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event entailed an important announcement from WhatsApp – Users will now be able to migrate their chat history when switching from iOS to Samsung devices.
According to WhatsApp:
“We’re excited to start rolling out the ability to move your WhatsApp history from iOS to Android. This happens without your messages being sent to WhatsApp in the process and includes voice messages, photos and videos. To start, this feature is available on any Samsung device running Android 10 or higher, and will be available on more Android devices soon.”
As fantastic as this sounds, there are a few caveats: You can transfer everything aside from your call history and display name, which is not a train smash, but would have sweetened the deal just that much more.
Additionally, users can only do the migration during initial setup of a new Samsung device. As per the instructions from WhatsApp, “your new Android device must be factory new or reset to factory settings.”
It’s important to note that the old iPhone needs to have WhatsApp iOS version 2.21.160.17 or newer and the new Samsung phone has to have WhatsApp version 2.21.16.20 or newer.
You’ll need a USB-C to Lightning cable to perform the transfer.
